Protecting Social Security and Medicare
During her time in Congress, Louise has led the fight to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare from cuts and privatization schemes. She understands these programs represent one of America’s greatest promises.
Louise opposes risky Republican plans that would privatize Social Security, exposing it to stock market fluctuations. Louise has spoken out against the Ryan-Romney proposal to turn Medicare into a Voucher system, ending the program as we know it and forcing seniors to negotiate on their own with private health insurance market while paying increased health care costs of more than $6,000 per year. Louise has resisted the harmful plan put forward by Republicans in Congress that would cut Medicaid funding by 34%, or $1.4 billion. This deplorable proposed cut would slash health care funding for the poor and for the elderly who live in nursing homes and assisted living centers.
Louise Slaughter understands that taking care of the elderly and vulnerable is one of our most important responsibilities. She will never support any attempt to strip away the safety net for those in need.
